Teen motor vehicle accidents may happen due to negligence

On Behalf of | Mar 11, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

A high school student in Texas recently lost her life in a tragic car crash. Now, her surviving family members and friends are grieving over her loss. Sometimes these types of motor vehicle accidents happen as a result of a driver’s carelessness, in which case the driver may be held financially accountable in civil court.

The accident took place early in the morning on a Sunday. Police said that a car carrying four teenagers was traveling along Interstate 20 after leaving a party. All of a sudden, the car left the roadway and struck a tree. The 16-year-old girl who was riding in the front passenger seat ended up passing away in the crash.

The three other teenagers suffered injuries and were taken to a medical center. Officials said the condition of the driver, an 18-year-old, was stable. Meanwhile, a girl, said to be 17, was in critical condition. Firefighters had to rescue the third teenager, a boy, from the back seat, after which he was reported to have suffered critical injuries. Authorities said that none of the teens were drinking on the morning of the crash.

If the police investigation reveals that the driver caused the crash due to negligence, the family members of the teenager who died in the crash may choose to file a wrongful death claim against the driver and any separate owner of the vehicle involved, seeking damages. In the same manner, the injured passengers may file personal injury claims. Liability must be established before the Texas court hearing the case, based upon a showing of negligence, before claims for monetary damage will be adjudicated. A case that is handled successfully may lead to a judgment for monetary damages that might help with addressing funeral costs, medical expenses and other documented damages stemming from these types of motor vehicle accidents.
